Immediate Openings for Senior Counselors

Program Overview:

Located approximately 30 miles west of Knoxville, TN, Kingston Academy is a 52-bed coed Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) helping children between the ages of 5 to 17. Both our Residential and Educational programs are licensed and accredited by Joint Commission (JCAHO), as well as Department of Mental Health and Disability services. Kingston Academy not only serves children from Tennessee, but also children from Nevada, Kentucky, Arkansas, West Virginia and North Carolina. We focus on behavioral change through the power of choice. Staff builds strong relationships with students to help them understand the choices that they have. This method with structure and consistency allows trust to grow between our students and staff. Students play such an important role to our structure that they participate in our staff orientation, trainings and campus government.

Programs offered include:

•       Long–term residential treatment for boys and girls ages 5 to 17 years old

•       Therapeutic Day school

•       Intensive Day Treatment

Job Overview:

Kingston Academy has immediate full-time needs for Senior Counselors. 

Responsibilities include:

•       Maintain safety, accountability (correct count of each student) and security of campus.

•       Recognize escalating behaviors and intervene at the appropriate level to ensure safety and security.

•       Observe and co-ordinate Residential Counselors as they supervise students in activities of daily living including overnight procedures, hygiene and cleanliness, meals, school, therapeutic endeavors, intramurals, sports, academics, skills of self-sufficiency and extracurricular activities both on and off campus.

•       Assist in mentoring and training Residential Counselors.

•       Coordinate with other Senior Counselors to write monthly employee unit schedule ensuring best coverage across campus on every shift.

•       Effectively communicate, both written and orally, all critical incidents and relevant situations involving students and staff.

•       Provide ongoing guidance to Residential Counselors concerning daily living, policy, accreditation and licensing.

•       Central point of focus for the shift. Coordinate the shift including written and oral communication between all interested parties.

•       Communicate all pertinent information to Program Manager, Group Living Director and Director on call.

•       Follow and implement individual treatment plans for all students.

•       Observe individual student behavior and over time recognize progress towards treatment goals.

•       Observe the peer culture for patterns indicating progress or regression in the program.

•       Plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate student activities on an ongoing basis including, recreational, educational and therapeutic activities.

•       Communicate all relevant information during shift change.

•       Create and implement program schedule.

•       Assess and evaluate staff performance.

•       Assess the operations of the shift and recommend modifications to the Team Leaders and Director of Group Living.

•       Transport students to court, home passes and appointments as necessary.

•       Have a clear and practical understanding of all federal, state and local laws as it pertains to daily living.

•       Have a clear and practical understanding of all pertinent Joint Commission standards.

•       Meet all deadlines as required.

Job Requirements:

•       Minimum of a High School Diploma/GED and 3 years of work experience in a child caring institution.

•       Valid TN Driver's license with good driving record.

•       Must be capable and proficient in the area of physical restraint when and/or if necessary.
