SEQUEL TRANSITIONAL ACADEMY / FALLS ACADEMY JOB DESCRIPTION


Position Title: Youth Counselor                   Supervised By: Group Leader

This is a level entry position with the possibilities of training for advancement.

Sequel Transition Academy is a residential treatment facility for children and youth between the ages of 16 and 20.  Currently Sequel Transition Academy has 32 licensed beds for individuals. Falls Academy is a residential treatment facility for children and youth between the ages of 13-20.

Job Responsibilities:

 

1. Maintain safety, accountability (correct count of each student) and security of campus.
2. Teach, coach and supervise students in activities of daily living including morning, bedtime and overnight procedures, hygiene and cleanliness, housekeeping, meals, school, therapeutic endeavors, intramurals, sports, academics, skills of self-sufficiency and extracurricular activities both on and off campus.
3. Observe the peer culture for patterns of behavior indicating progress or regression in the program.
4. Observe individual student behavior over time and recognize progress towards treatment goals.
5. Supervise the following areas:
a. Bed Checks - Use of flashlight judiciously to ensure a positive student count and identification of the youth. This will be performed at shift changes and/or at least every fifteen minutes. Only one youth at a time may have permission to go to the restroom. At no time should the students be left unsupervised.
b. Transitions – Accurate count (and check the student list) of all students before any transition. Staff should be placed at the end and in the middle of a line movement (not at the front). Staff should take an accurate count (and check their student list) after the line movement.
c. Showers and Rest Rooms
d. Meals, activities (including student hygiene and dorm cleanliness) and all other student interaction and behavior -
e. Handle Emergencies - In the event of an emergency, notify the individuals listed on the Emergency Procedures. Give First-Aid until help arrives, if necessary.
f. Fire Drills - Oversee fire drills if there is an alarm.
g. Answer Telephone - Answer telephones and take messages.
h. Communication Log - Note all observed interaction during the shift. Any and all significant data should be included in Communication Log.
6. Effectively communicate, both written and orally, all critical incidents involving students and staff.
7. Plan, implement and evaluate student activities on an ongoing basis including, recreational, educational and therapeutic activities.
eight. Follow and implement individual treatment plans for all students.
9. Recognize escalating behaviors and intervene at the appropriate level to ensure safety and security.
10. Transport students to court, home passes and appointments as necessary.
11. Have a clear and practical understanding of all federal, state and local laws as it pertains to daily living.
12. Have a clear and practical understanding of all pertinent accreditation standards.
13. Meet all deadlines as required.
14. All other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:

* High School diploma or GED is required.
• College degree in Human Services field and one year previous work/volunteer experience with juveniles preferred.
• An employee must be at least eighteen years of age and may not have on record a substantiated report of child abuse or neglect. An employee who is under the age of twenty one must be under the direct supervision of an experienced child care staff member who is at least twenty one years of age and must be at least three years older than any child the employee supervises.
• It is an essential function of the position that the staff member must be capable and proficient in the area of physical restraint when and/or if necessary.


Hours
AM / 6:45am – 3pm
PM / 2:45pm – 11pm

Overnight shift:  10pm - eightam

This is an entry level position beginning pay at $12.12/hour.  Advancements done within the company.
