Job Description

Design, procure, install, and maintain industry leading high temperature and acid leaching processing equipment for a variety of material forms. Incorporate the latest and best technology in existing equipment. Develop and maintain operational and maintenance procedures relating to this equipment. Assist and direct maintenance workers in troubleshooting and to develop work-around procedures in the event of equipment or system failures. Modify equipment and control software to accommodate process changes. Plan and implement furnace systems changes to maintain product quality, improve equipment reliability and minimize downtime.

Key Accountabilities

Evaluate new control systems technologies for possible use.
Install, upgrade and troubleshoot PLC equipment.
Initiate improvements and upgrades to furnaces, pumps and plumbing systems, temperature control and material drive systems to increase reliability.
Manage capital projects and direct the efforts of contractors and consulting engineers to meet schedules and budgets.
Specify, configure, and maintain computer-based control and data acquisition systems.
Continuously evaluate processing requirements and equipment performance and devise improvements and modifications.
Contribute to energy management and reduction.
Provide technical support for operation and maintenance personnel.
Prepare Work Instructions for operation and maintenance of equipment.
Prepare mechanical and electrical drawings, P&ID drawings, and specifications. Size, specify, and select equipment to meet process requirements.
Available on-call 24/7 to provide support and direct operators and maintenance personnel.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or other relevant 4-year Technical Degree with minimum of 7 years’ experience in Facilities/Plant Engineering.

It requires a person who can analyze and solve problems and is familiar with a wide range of equipment and technologies. There is no handbook to consult.

A thorough grounding and direct experience in vacuum technology, heat transfer, fluid / gas flow, electrical power distribution, and distributed control systems is required. It requires the ability to define, conceive, design, procure, and install complicated systems.

Requires knowledge of computer CAD, spreadsheet, word processing and scheduling programs.

Understands preventive maintenance, Overall Equipment Effectiveness and mean time between failures.

This position is critical to the proper functioning of the Gardena production facility. The equipment must function reliably to maintain product quality and production schedules. It differs from most facilities engineering positions in that most of the equipment is so specialized and unique it requires more equipment design effort rather than purchasing and installing commercially available equipment.

Requires good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate at the shop floor level as well as senior management.

Physical Demands

Requires that the employee be able to walk, climb, stoop, and reach around piping, conduit, and industrial equipment. Must be able to climb and descend ladders to elevated and/or below-ground equipment installations. Able to see into equipment enclosures and work in cramped spaces. Requires entry into confined spaces and the use of air quality monitoring equipment. Includes extended periods of desk work at a computer. While performing the duties of this job, the position may require standing, sitting, walking, climbing, reaching, touching, crouching, and some lifting of items up to 20 lbs.

Work Environment

Requires work in and around high temperature furnaces, carbonization ovens and corrosive environments. Works with / around acid, high voltage power systems and flammable / asphyxiating gas systems. May be exposed to hydrochloric acid lubricating oils, solvents, carbon black, and treated cooling water requiring the use of applicable PPE. Must work and communicate is close proximity to loud, operating equipment. Will access confined spaces requiring the use of air quality and flammable gas monitoring systems.
