Job Description

Position to focus on coatings applied to the surface of machined graphite parts, but may also include carbon composite and/or other carbon based materials. Activities will revolve around production support, but will include some product development work and Customer complaint resolution. Involvement in areas other than coating will also be required, on occasion, to fully understand and complete overall job responsibilities.

Key Accountabilities
  • Support operation of the CVD department concerning process engineering activities; i.e. work in response to specific quality issues or for process optimization such as reduce scrap/lower cost
  • Assist in Customer complaint resolution from CVD process side
  • Support six-sigma and continuous development activities in support of CVD department goals
  • Meet Customer quality and delivery expectations
  • Interface with other departments in St
  • Marys to define and focus project activities

  • Support development of coating related projects

  • Periodic reporting of activities as requested

  • Production process engineering to ensure consistent, reliable performance of production equipment.
    Acute problem solving skills required.


Job Requirements

  • B.S. degree in engineering, materials science or equivalent technical discipline. Will consider a mechanical engineer degree with relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with materials characterization and physical property testing preferred
  • 2-6 years experience in production and/or R&D environment
  • Ability to apply statistical methodology to process control and problem solving
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products
  • Experience with statistical software systems; Minitab experience is preferred
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Ability to work efficiently in cross-functional team settings

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with CVD/CVI processing preferred
  • Background in graphite and general ceramic materials preferred
  • Manufacturing engineering experience is preferred.


    Physical Demands
    • Occasional lifting of parts weighing up to 50 pounds
    • Frequent sitting
    • Frequent walking to various departments within the plant
    • Use of sight, smell and hearing senses to avoid injury while working and traveling within the plant

    Work Environment

    Primary work environment will be a combination of office, manufacturing and lab spaces. Manufacturing locations will be mixture of clean room and non-clean room spaces. Specific locations may require one or more of the following personal protection devices: safety glasses, hard hat, dust respirator, full face respirator, and flame retardant uniforms.
    Limited travel to other SGL sites or to customer or vendor sites will also be required with environment to vary based upon location.
