Job Description

Smalley, the market leader in industrial ring and wave/compression springs, is seeking an Automation Engineering Manager. This is a new role, created to support corporate growth and strategic initiatives, offers a great opportunity for the right individual to have a large impact. Smalley is looking for someone who has proven management experience in machine design, factory automation, and project management. In this role, the Automation Engineering Manager will perform senior engineering work and coordinate a variety of engineering duties. He/She will independently plan and design production tools and machines, improve manufacturing methods and processes, create solutions to production problems, and support new manufacturing programs. This role requires the ability to build and maintain strong relationships across departments and communicate well at various levels across the organization.

Your Tasks

  • Independently design full production machines, machine parts and tooling.
  • Use 2D and 3D modeling software design tools to create machine designs, designing of manufacturing automation equipment and assist in plant layout proposals.
  • Make recommendations to modify or replace equipment as necessary to support new products, demand or improve productivity.
  • Design, plan, coordinate, and implement factory automation in manufacturing processes.
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency by creating and optimizing programming methodologies and leveraging the most efficient fixture and tooling available.
  • Construct equipment and devices with automatic equipment aimed at feeding, processing, transferring, adjusting, measuring and testing; taking into account corporate standard components and processes.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement roadmap for the plant. Leverage tools to drive continued operational improvements.
  • Perform financial justification and manages capital projects from inception to completion.
  • Coordinate cross functional teams to drive business and organizational results.

Job Requirements

Our Expectations

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (ME preferred); MBA a plus.
  • Possess strong ME and IE skill sets that will be utilized in value stream transformations including automation. A broad electrical and mechanical background, including hands on experience with PLC’s, HMI’s, robots, vision systems and associated programming software is desired.
  • Demonstrated capability to manage and improve manufacturing processes.
  • Experienced in continuous improvement, Lean, 6 Sigma preferred.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing methods, tooling, fixturing and materials.
  • Proven track record of automation development and deployment in a factory setting, ideally in low volume/high mix settings.
  • Experience in project management including MS Project schedule development a plus.
  • Advanced skill with all MS Office products and the willingness to learn company specific software.
