Job Description

WBIR-TV, a TEGNA owned NBC affiliate located in Knoxville, TN is hiring a Manager of Operations. The person filling this role will be tasked with the oversight of all Operations Department staff and equipment. Operations includes Production and Master Control staff, and the management of our Production and Master Control Automation systems. Our Production workflow is the lifeblood of our operations. WBIR-TV produce 10.5 hours of live local content each day. The ideal candidate will be able to jump in and take on the needs that are seen and form solutions on the go. Sometimes juggling multiple needs at once will be necessary. This position requires someone that doesn’t mind being asked to step outside their comfort zone, and be willing to learn and adapt to an ever-evolving broadcast environment. Candidate must work well with a team, but also be confident enough to tackle problems solo with little supervision. In addition to staff and technical management, this person will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of our studios. Finally, the candidate will be required to provide technical support for 10.5 hours of live production per day, and help staff some remote productions. We are looking for someone to bring new, forward thinking production ideas to the table to help us adapt to a changing viewer base.

Job Requirements

 

  • Design, develop and execute new and innovative aesthetics and production techniques.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Newsroom, Master Control, and Production automation systems.
  • Experience with Crispin Automation, Omneon Spectrum, ENPS, Bitcentral, Vertigo, X-Play, ELC, and MOS speak a massive plus.
  • Comfortable with operation and installation of cameras, video switchers, routers, audio consoles, intercom and graphics systems.
  • Work closely with the News Operations Manager to facilitate changes and updates to our automation systems as they work hand-in-hand with News Automation workflows.
  • Oversee the overall look of our product across multiple platforms.
  • Show competent understanding of HD signal flow and signal limitations and troubleshooting.
  • Act as liaison to the news staff to schedule and staff not only day-to-day studio needs, but also special projects.
  • Be the point person to manage content in and out of our Master Control. This includes scheduling special feeds and programming changes.
  • Manage training and cross-training of production staff.
  • Create and enforce Operations Department policy.
  • Function as a managing backup in the Chief Engineer’s absence.
  • Take on other tasks assigned by the Chief Engineer.
  • SBE certification a plus.
  • Ability to work with a flexible schedule a must.
  • May require some nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be willing to be called in for emergencies.
  • Must be able to lift heavy loads, work on ladders and elevated locations, and in tight spaces with varying light and noise levels and in any combination of the above.
  • College degree, technical degree, or equivalent experience required.
