Job Description

The TEGNA Design Tank is in search of a multi-skilled Graphics Playout Coordinator/Operator to be a part of its internal creative department and centralized graphics hub, servicing our 50+ local broadcast news stations across the country. The Graphics Playout Coordinator/Operator will be responsible for overseeing the production, implementation and support of CG templates across several graphic playout platforms. They will work with a team of twenty-five talented motion graphic designers to create and provide best-in-class templated graphics to thousands of staff in the field, research new methods, test new production systems, interface with vendors, train staff, and more. The position works closely with the Technology & Operations Manager, Design Production Coordinator, Creative Director, Design Director and Production Specialist.  Grab a glimpse of what it’s like to work in the TANK here:  


  • Oversee the design, production, testing and support of CG Templated graphics for various playout and design systems, including, but not limited to: Grass Valley Vertigo, ChyronHegoPrime/Newsticker/Axis World Graphics. 
  • Train and mentor artist staff on CG template design and implementation best practices
  • Delegate as necessary to fellow CG team members to maintain peak operating efficiency with little field downtime
  • Interface with clients, stations and vendors to assist in troubleshooting, gathering feedback, resolving and documenting outstanding issues and template creation.
  • Researching and piloting new methods of templatized graphic solutions to reduce cost and improve services in the field
  • Establishing training procedures for artist staff to facilitate faster adoption and use of CG systems


Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

  • 3-5 years’ experience designing with CG Playout systems such as Chyron Prime, Grass Valley Vertigo, Ross XPression, VizRT, Expio
  • Candidate must have professional experience with CG template design and control room operation during live events/production
  • Candidate must have a strong aptitude for learning and understanding complex workflows and procedures for building, testing and implementing templated graphics
  • Experience testing with newsroom script software such as ENPS, 
  • Working knowledge of MOS protocol
  • Strong executional skills in Adobe products, specifically After Effects and Photoshop, as well as Cinema 4D preferred
  • Strong design and animation skills
  • Familiarity with WSI Weather Systems preferred
  • An understanding of broadcast standards and newsroom control room CG template technical requirements and options
  • Control room technical direction and/or location CG Operation experience preferred
  • Experience with a hub-spoke graphics deployment model preferred
  • Template development driven by automation and data sources
  • A professional portfolio showing CG templates that you’ve built. We want to understand what your templates have accomplished and solved for
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to work with clients
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to perform under tight deadlines
  • Able to react to change and take direction effectively and productively
  • Strong spelling and grammar skills
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule (evenings & weekends on occasions)
