Job Description

The Group HR Director, Texas leads the HR function for TEGNA’s properties in Texas including a team of HR business partners.  This role requires regular communication with all HR Business Partners and station General Managers on matters such as recruitment and retention, employee engagement and culture, performance management, training and development and effective employee relations.   In particular, the Texas HR Group Director will be instrumental in driving a talent development culture, to include executing an internal development strategy to promote our best and brightest talent for our Texas properties and the company. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead HR function for TEGNA’s Texas stations (currently 11 markets and approximately 1,100 employees), including regular touch points with all Texas HR business partners and General Managers
  • Drive a talent development culture; develop and execute an internal development strategy and forums to showcase top talent in Texas
  • Lead TEGNA’s Texas succession planning efforts (Organization Vitality) with HR business partners and General Managers; identify opportunities for continuous improvement; feed results of Texas succession planning into wider TEGNA succession plan
  • In partnership with HR business partners, identify organizational people strengths/gaps and devise strategies to strengthen and build leadership capability
  • Ensure talent identification and development practices to drive a diverse and inclusive workforce
  • Provide guidance and coaching to managers and employees on employee advocacy/engagement, employee relations, performance management, career development, talent assessment, acquisition and retention and workplace investigations.
  • Manage and develop HR talent for Texas and for TEGNA.
  • Work collaboratively with Human Resources colleagues on special projects and initiatives and best practice sharing.
  • Serve as a creative and strategic partner to leadership, aligning human capital needs with company objectives.
  • Effectively communicate TEGNA’s value proposition to external candidates and serve as a brand ambassador for the company.
  • Provide excellent customer service in terms of responsiveness, time management and communication.
  • React productively to change, effectively work at an operational level with multiple stakeholders, and act quickly and confidently under pressure.
  • Handle complex and/or sensitive day-to-day people issues.
  • Understand and adhere to local, state and federal laws regarding employment, wage and hour, OSHA and related laws.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in Human Resources or related field.  Master’s degree or HR certification is preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of HR generalist experience is required, specifically on performance management, employee relations and HR business partnering with leaders.
  • At least 5 years’ experience designing, developing and driving talent development programs, organization design and succession planning
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly establish effective relationships, collaborate, lead and influence.
  • Record of success advising managers on the full range of HR/people issues. Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment and deliver results for multiple stakeholders.
  • A working knowledge of state and federal employment laws.
  • Strong ethical standards and integrity.
  • Proficient knowledge/ability with all Microsoft Office Applications and using social media applications in recruiting.
  • Previous experience working with union contracts preferred.
