at TEGNA

Job Description

TEGNA Media is looking for a multi-platform assignment editor who can organize and coordinate the news operations at KING 5, the NBC affiliate in the Seattle-Tacoma market. KING 5 Media Group is the largest media company in the Pacific Northwest and consists of multiple broadcast and digital properties. KING 5 is one of the strongest, most trusted local news brands in the country, delivering the largest audiences across all screens among its peers in Seattle.

The person in this role will be more than an assignment editor. He or she will be expected to be a content creator – either directly (writing for our platforms or producing streaming media) or in a supporting role by helping execute the vision of newsroom producers and editors. The role requires a focus on multi-platform storytelling -- broadcast, online and social content. This person must be able to multi-task during the newsgathering hours, skillfully using proprietary databases, government information systems, social media and digital tools to research and discover stories. This role requires exceptional organizing and planning skills.

In this role, you will:

  • Dispatch reporters and photojournalists to cover breaking news stories.
  • Publish content to website and social media accounts.
  • Support “breaking newsdesk” to help talent go live on video for all platforms.
  • Coordinate and dispatch KING’s news helicopter.
  • Assemble daily news plans, including reporter/photographer assignments, list of active stories, and snapshot of what competitors are pursuing.
  • Coordinate sharing of resources with other stations in the TEGNA group.
  • Work closely with executive producers and other news managers to plan appropriate staffing for daily news gathering.
  • Cooperate with show producers and station engineers on live shots and other broadcast needs.
  • Develop and maintain lists of contacts at public agencies, major businesses, nonprofit organizations and other influential entities and individuals.
  • Monitor law enforcement and emergency responder scanner traffic to alert newsroom to breaking news.
  • Monitor local, state and federal court websites on cases and individuals in the news.
  • Do research to support reporters, producers and photojournalists on individual and ongoing stories.
  • Represent KING in conversations with other media organizations about pool coverage and access issues.
  • Be curious about new technologies and tools that could improve the assignment process.
  • Perform other tasks as required by supervisor or executive producer.

Job Requirements

Here’s what you need:

  • BA/BS in journalism, communications or related field
  • 2-5 years of experience preferred
  • Experience in a broadcast television newsroom
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to write clearly and effectively.
  • Understanding the tenants of professional journalism
  • Strong social media skills, including an active news hound presence on Twitter and Facebook
  • Knowledge of ENPS, Edius and Axis graphics a plus
  • Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events
