Job Description

KING 5 is looking for an experienced, motivated News Content Director to lead day-to-day editorial coverage, while overseeing content creation and distribution across multiple platforms.

We are looking for a leader who embraces creative storytelling and investigative journalism as key components of newscasts as well as digital and social platforms. 

Our ideal candidate is a proven editorial leader with strong news judgment, a deep understanding of video or television storytelling and a passion for innovation. The News Content Director will work in partnership with the Digital Content Director and Local Programming Director on local editorial execution and report to the Director of Content, who is responsible for the overall content strategy. Together, they will lead the content teams in the reporting of engaging and unique content to a multi-platform audience.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead the newsroom in execution of the station’s brand
  • Lead the newsroom to create unique, engaging and rich storytelling experiences to grow a loyal audience across all platforms
  • Direct the newsgathering team to ensure we are serving our audience and to keep on top of breaking news and story leads
  • Work with the Director of Content to set strategy to increase ratings growth for all time periods
  • Collaborate with Digital Content Director and Local Programming Director on editorial strategy for daily content creation and distribution across all platforms
  • Be the voice of innovation in the newsroom and inspire others to follow your lead
  • Develop and implement workflows that deliver our content 24/7 across current and future platforms with storytelling that is optimized for each screen
  • Partner with the Digital Content Director to use data to inform editorial decisions
  • Lead the content team in identifying new content types and innovative formats and tools that help us reach and serve new audiences
  • Collaborate with content leaders across TEGNA to maximize the sharing of our content and to leverage innovation and best practices among stations
  • Teach, coach, and mentor the entire newsroom in best practices for writing and producing content
  • Hold newsroom employees accountable to TEGNA’s ethical and editorial standards

Job Requirements

Here’s what you need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, related field or equivalent experience
  • 7-10 years of content experience, including generation of original content and 2-3 years managing other journalists
  • Solid journalistic judgment and a news philosophy that emphasizes accurate, fair and unique local content, along with community engagement
  • Passion and vision for emerging media and new storytelling techniques
  • Proven skills in producing engaging newscasts and digital content
  • Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and the ability to deal with the rapid pace of news
  • Strong organizational and communication skills and the ability to work under time pressure deadlines
  • Knowledge of principles of ethical journalism
