Job Description

KVUE, the TEGNA-owned ABC affiliate in Austin, Texas, is looking for a creative, innovative and experienced News Director to lead day-to-day editorial coverage while overseeing content creation and distribution across multiple platforms.

We are looking for a leader who embraces creative storytelling and investigative journalism as key components of newscasts as well as digital and social platforms. 

Our ideal candidate is a proven editorial leader with strong news judgment, a deep understanding of video or television storytelling and a passion for innovation. The News Director will work in partnership with the Director of Marketing and Digital. Together, they will lead the content teams in the reporting of engaging and unique content to a multi-platform audience. 

KVUE and TEGNA are re-imagining local news in the digital age— thinking big and being bold to deliver content to our audience on multiple platforms.

Job Responsibilities

  • Strategically lead, inspire and manage News Department.  Lead a competitive spirit in everything we do
  • Lead the newsroom in execution of the station’s brand
  • Lead the newsroom to create unique, engaging and rich storytelling experiences to grow a loyal audience across all platforms
  • Direct the newsgathering team to ensure we are serving our audience and to keep on top of breaking news and story leads
  • Collaborate with Digital Director on editorial strategy for daily content creation and distribution across all platforms
  • Be the voice of innovation in the newsroom and inspire others to follow your lead
  • Develop and implement workflows that deliver our content 24/7 across current and future platforms with storytelling that is optimized for each screen
  • Partner with the digital team to use data to inform editorial decisions
  • Lead the content team in identifying new content types and innovative formats and tools that help us reach and serve new audiences
  • Collaborate with content leaders across TEGNA to maximize the sharing of our content and to leverage innovation and best practices among stations
  • Recruit and hire top notch journalists for all platforms
  • Teach, coach, and mentor the entire newsroom in best practices for writing and producing content
  • Hold newsroom employees accountable to TEGNA’s ethical and editorial standards

Job Requirements

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and news leadership experience preferred
  • 7-10 years of content experience, including generation of original content, and 2-3 years managing other journalists.  Proven track record of holding people accountable
  • Successful innovative leadership and staff and product development skills 
  • Exceptional planning and execution skills
  • Outstanding communicator
  • Be a proven, courageous innovator in developing shows, content, text and community events.
  • Be a proven winner in breaking news content on all platforms
  • Have a history of hiring the best and brightest journalists, storytellers and video producers
  • Solid journalistic judgement and a news philosophy that emphasizes accurate, fair and unique local content, along with community engagement
  • Experience in photojournalism, editing, and content management systems
  • Understanding of the tenets of professional journalism
  • Skills in producing engaging, content-driven newscasts and digital content
  • Strong social media skills, including an active news hound presence on Twitter and Facebook
  • Knowledge of ENPS, Edius and Axis graphics a plus
  • Organizational skills and the ability to work under time pressure deadlines
  • Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events
