Job Description

WOI Local 5, the TEGNA station in Des Moines, IA is looking for a dynamic Reporter/ Multi-Skilled Journalist to join our award-winning news team. The Journalist we hire will be a creative storyteller who excels in this age of digital journalism.  If you use creative writing and compelling video to craft your stories, while providing the truth and context our audience needs, apply now! 

In this role, you will:

  • Develop original, enterprise content through social listening and independent sources
  • Write, shoot and edit daily news content for on-air broadcasting and digital platforms
  • Write in a captivating and authentic style
  • Use the latest editing and photography tools to tell great stories 
  • Deliver on-air news events, under deadline, in an engaging, compelling, and accurate manner
  • Interview news subjects and research for facts and credibility
  • Develop news sources for general assignment and special areas of interest
  • Operate news-gathering vehicle to and from various locations
  • Use creative production techniques such as graphics, viewer pictures, virtual interviews, etc. to enhance stories
  • Transmit and present exciting live reports with current technology
  • Perform other tasks as required by a manager. 

Job Requirements

Here’s what you need:

  • BA/BS in journalism, communications or related field
  • 1-3 years of experience preferred
  • Bilingual (English & Spanish) speaking a plus
  • Experience in photojournalism, editing, and digital content management systems
  • Understanding the tenants of professional journalism
  • A portfolio with examples of strong breaking news reporting
  • Ability to generate creative, engaging, content-driven live shots
  • Strong social media skills, including an active news hound presence on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
  • Knowledge of iNews, Avid and/or Adobe Premiere editing software a plub
  • Organizational skills and the ability to work under constant deadlines
  • Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events
  • Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record
  • Flexible with availability to work different shifts and weekends
