Job Description

ABC10, the TEGNA station located in Sacramento, CA, is seeking an experienced Senior Broadcast Engineer. This position will report directly to the Head of Technology and Operations. Without supervision, the successful candidate will provide technical support to broadcast facilities during all phases of studio and location production, perform high-level maintenance on the most sophisticated equipment as well as maintain, install and modify technical broadcasting equipment in Broadcast Studios. Act as point person for transmitter site and remote sites. ​


  • Set up and operate various broadcasting equipment in broadcast studios and on location; check equipment for operational readiness; provide operational assistance/instruction to others as needed.
  • Provide education/training to Broadcast support Engineering on new equipment installations.
  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair complex electronic, computer based, optical and mechanical broadcasting systems; repair and maintain equipment in emergency and preventative situations.
  • Design facility changes required to accommodate new broadcasting equipment; aid in evaluating costs and specifications required and install new equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain various technical records and engineering logs pertaining to broadcast equipment performance and discrepancies according to regulations.
  • Develop product documentation as needed.
  • Assist in the review and analysis of new and revised system specifications for completeness and compatibility with present software applications and system capabilities.
  • Perform modifications according to engineering specifications and decide priority of repair, maintenance and modification.
  • Test and evaluate new equipment for possible purchase by station or department; recommend equipment for purchase.
  • Monitor inventory of replacement parts and other engineering supplies; order equipment according to departmental procedures.
  • Set up and maintain IP, Fiber Optic and SDI transmission equipment for broadcast. 
  • Evaluate remote sites to determine broadcast feasibility, with direction from supervisor; specify facility/site changes to accommodate broadcast requirements.
  • Assist in the planning, development and presentation of training programs for staff in use of new broadcast systems and equipment. 

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Electronics, Broadcasting or related field AND 5 years' experience in high level broadcast engineering troubleshooting which includes equipment repair and installation, or
  • 7 years' experience in broadcast engineering which includes successful project management and system vendor supervision/tracking, or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of broadcast protocols and best practices. 
  • Knowledge in maintenance, usage and design of technical broadcast equipment.
  • Senior level understanding of transmitter. 
  • Experience in responding to operational/technical equipment problems.
  • Experience in repair of digital and computer systems.
  • Experience in technical requirements in remote live broadcasting preferred.
  • Must communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Experience in Broadcasting Transmission.
  • Knowledgeable in ENG truck maintenance and repair. 
  • Must work effectively with people from a variety of diverse backgrounds and experience.
  • Must be comfortable working in a high-paced environment with constant deadlines
  • Meet broadcast deadlines, make decisions and take corrective action without supervision.
  • Must be able to drive to remote locations in support of productions or for equipment repair.
  • Must be able to work any shift in a 24/7/365 operation.
