Are you curious? Are you passionate about making a difference in the community? TEGNA is looking for a dynamic and passionate Investigative Executive Producer to join a new Texas regional investigative/deep-dive team.

This team needs a strong leader who can keep the team on track during short-term and long-term investigative projects that provide context and depth on issues and stories that affect Texans living in TEGNA’s 11 Texas markets.

Candidates should show they can identify, plan, research and execute deeper level investigative projects, as well as how they would lead a team to produce deep-dive explainers, data-driven journalism, and more using the news of the day.

You must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, be a great writer, develop sources and story concepts, perform advanced story research, and present content across multiple platforms. Shooting and editing skills are a plus.

The successful candidate will join a team that will help Texans understand. This position will also support the entire news operation during breaking news and with investigative sidebars to significant daily content.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead a team that will enterprise and develop investigative stories affecting Texans.
  • Dig into complex and important issues related to daily news topics in TEGNA’s Texas markets
  • Develop reliable sources and contacts in general and specialized areas of interest.
  • Use open records laws and computer assisted reporting skills to find information and data that lend depth and context to your stories.
  • Write in an exciting, captivating and authentic manner for multiple platforms.
  • Help with production ideas for data content in on-air and online stories.
  • Use CAP and NICAR skills to find data and turn that into great stories.
  • Develop story ideas, write, shoot and edit news stories for on-air broadcasting.
  • Use the latest editing and photography tools to tell great stories.
  • Develop original content through social listening and independent sources.
  • Interview news subjects and research for facts and credibility.
  • Produce investigations that are unique and captivating.
  • Operate news gathering vehicle to and from various locations.
  • Use creative production techniques such as graphics and new forms of media (viewer pictures, webcam interviews, etc.) to enhance stories.
  • Help with production ideas for data content in on-air and online stories.

Job Requirements

  • BA/BS in journalism, communications or related field
  • 3-5+ years of experience preferred
  • Experience with CAP, LexisNexis and NICAR
  • Bilingual (English & Spanish) speaker a plus
  • Experience in photojournalism, editing, and content management systems
  • Understanding of the tenets of professional journalism
  • A portfolio with examples of strong breaking news reporting
  • Ability to generate creative, engaging, content-driven live shots
  • Strong social media skills, including an active news hound presence on Twitter and Facebook
  • Knowledge of ENPS, Edius and Axis graphics a plus
  • Organizational skills and the ability to work under constant time pressure deadlines
  • Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events
  • Demonstrated experience writing, reporting, shooting, and editing video
  • Experience with “spot news”- proven ability to react quickly to breaking events
  • Strong communication skills (written/oral) for on-air delivery
  • Proven ability to work under pressure while meeting daily assigned deadlines
  • Ability to interact productively & positively within different environments
  • Applicable knowledge of multiplatform news gathering tools and resources including digital media
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record
