Job Summary

The Analyst II prepares and analyzes environmental samples using both standard and complex testing according to scientific and EPA methodology in compliance with TestAmerica’s Quality Assurance programs and SOP’s. Validates and reviews data for accuracy through Level I reviews. Uploads laboratory data into LIMS system to generate data packages for delivery to clients. Must be knowledgeable of a broad range of laboratory testing equipment requiring the exercise of discretion and judgment in its operation.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs laboratory procedures requiring knowledge of scientific methods and testing procedures including:
  • Batching and prepping samples for analysis taking into account special and varied client and QA requirements
  • Making reagents for sample analysis
  • Aliquots extracted samples to maximize laboratory productivity
  • Preparing appropriate standards to ensure compliant data
  • Determining appropriate routine and complex analysis methods for a wide variety of organic and inorganic samples
  • Operation, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory instruments
  • Uploads data into LIMS system for review.
  • Performs Level I review of data produced to ensure accuracy.
  • Maintains logbooks.
  • Monitors refrigerator temperatures.
  • Responsible for performing job functions within TestAmerica EHS and QA standards.
  • Maintains housekeeping standards for work area.
  • Inventories and stocks laboratory supplies.


Secondary Duties

  • Orders supplies.
  • Washes and inventories glassware.
  • Writes NCM’s for projects with QA issues.
  • Purges analyzed samples.
  • Assists in training new analysts on laboratory procedures.
  • Assists in other areas of laboratory when needed.


Supervisory Responsibilities

No direct supervisory responsibilities. Reviews work of other analysts and may assist other analysts.


Working Relationships

Internal contacts:

  • Supervisor to give direction and assistance in analyzing samples
  • Department Managers to prioritize workload to meet hold times
  • Sample Receiving to retrieve samples
  • Project Managers when there are questions about or difficulties with samples and hold times
  • Quality Assurance to ensure adherence to SOP’s
  • Reporting personnel to answer questions and resolve issues
  • EH&S Coordinator in regard to waste disposal


External contacts:

  • Glassware vendors
  • Service repair personnel for equipment
  • Auditors

Job Requirements

  • Education:

BS/BA degree in chemistry or related field. 3 years laboratory experience may substitute for degree.

  • Experience:

Minimum 2 years’ experience in routine and complex laboratory procedures and instruments, preferably in a production environment

  • Licensure/Certificate/Registration:



  • Analytical and/or General Science
  • Scientific methods and method compliance
  • Strong mathematics background
  • Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures
  • Operating and calibrating laboratory instruments

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting and Carrying:

Lifting up to 50 pounds and carrying up to 30 pounds when moving samples and disposing of waste

  • Pushing and Pulling:

          Pushing and pulling up to 200 pounds when moving samples carts and gas tanks

  • Body Positions:

Approximately 60% of time standing when analyzing samples, 10% walking when moving about laboratory, and 30% sitting when working at computer, doing paper work, or analyzing samples. These percentages vary significantly depending upon duties being performed. Must be able to sit, stand, or stoop for long periods of time.

  • Body Movements:

Stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching when getting samples and performing analyses

  • Smelling:

For unusual odors, leakage, contamination

  • Hand Use:

Handling samples, operating instruments, data entry

  • Hearing:

Conversational hearing ability

  • Vision:

Performing analyses, viewing computer screen, doing paperwork

  • Speaking:

             Conversational speaking ability


Environmental Conditions

Typical laboratory environment with occasional time in office areas. Varying degree of exposure to fumes, odors, dusts, and gases dependent upon samples being analyzed. Constant background noise from hoods, fans, and laboratory instruments. Potential exposure to toxic, caustic, or carcinogenic samples in laboratory area.
