Tetra Tech Inc. is currently seeking a part-time, junior level Environmental Scientist or Geologist for our Honolulu, HI office.

This position will provide project support for environmental projects, related to DoD, federal, state, municipal, and commercial clients and will be responsible for writing technical reports primarily and supporting field work. Duties supporting task level work include: preparing reports, memos, and tables with relevant project data; performing field investigations (including soil, water, sediment, and air sampling; drilling and subcontractor supervision; and coordination with analytical laboratories), construction and/or remedial action oversight, health and safety air monitoring, biological surveys and monitoring; asbestos and lead sampling (including asbestos project monitoring and lead risk assessments), pending qualifications, as well as GIS mapping support.

The candidate will work collaboratively with and under the supervision of a senior scientist or project manager. You will be expected to follow company safety standards, participate in safety training, and prepare as well as implement site-specific health and safety plans. The candidate will be responsible for reviewing, understanding, and implementing site-specific work plans and scopes of work and will help prepare various technical deliverables including reports, letters, tables, and figures.

The selected candidate’s responsibilities will help support environmental due diligence, compliance, and NEPA assessment efforts for projects throughout Hawaii. Additional responsibilities may include desktop reviews of historical site data; field visits to document environmental conditions at sites; report preparation for due diligence assessments; biological field survey assistance; and assistance with project coordination activities. Daily interaction with project teams, clients, subcontractors and regulatory agency staff is expected. Hours per week will be variable (predominantly 24 hours per week initially, up to full-time during peak times).


Job Requirements

The ideal candidate will have must have 2-3 years of post-graduate professional experience in environmental consulting or a scientific/technical position. In addition, you must have/be able to:
• A willingness to support technical report preparation tasks including writing reports or sections of reports.
• A willingness to support office-based project tasks such as data tabulation and screening, compiling document references, performing research, marking up figures/site plans, coordinating equipment orders, and communicating with subcontractors/vendors.
• Observe, evaluate, and document site field conditions and changes in field conditions.
• Experience with using ArcGIS to support environmental due diligence, compliance, and NEPA assessment is preferred.
• Ability to analyze chemistry and environmental data is preferred.
• Ability to interface with clients, subcontractors, community groups, and internal customers is preferred.
• Working knowledge of the conceptual site model process is preferred. Experience including environmental due diligence is preferred.
• Experience with DoD, federal, state, municipal, and private sector projects is preferred.
• Ability to review and summarize agency regulations, policies, and procedures into “plain English” is preferred.

Must have an undergraduate level degree in Environmental Sciences, Geology, Biology, Earth Science, Environmental Planning or a related technical discipline is required.
• ArcGIS mapping capabilities are preferred.
• Portable GPS unit skills and experience with Collector for ArcGIS is preferred.
• OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER Training is preferred.
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Training and 8-hour OSHA Supervisors of Hazardous Waste Operations Training are preferred.
• Lead Based Paint Inspector and Risk Assessor Certifications are preferred.
• Asbestos Inspector and Asbestos Project Monitor Certifications are preferred.

The work environment will consist of a mix of office and field work, with some field work requiring overnight stays.
• This position requires being able to drive with no restrictions and pass a motor vehicle background check.
• Work locations may include urban and remote areas, and occur in any weather.
• Candidate must be able to walk around project sites and must be physically able to carry up to 35 pounds of equipment (such as sampling tools, GPS unit, field screening equipment and cameras) during field work.
• Field activities take place in a variety of weather conditions, and can occur in remote locations and include areas of uneven terrain or occur during harsh weather.
• Field sampling and monitoring may include various media (soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, soil gas, and air).
• Candidate must be able to sit at a desk / computer in an office environment

This position requires you to drive on a regular basis and will require passing a motor vehicle record (MVR) background check. In addition, this position required background checks.
