Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented financial professional to lead comprehensive accounting operations for a global organization. This role involves managing all core finance functions, including accounting, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and grants administration.
The Controller will ensure strong internal systems and procedures are in place to support smooth program operations and successful audits. In addition to overseeing day-to-day financial activities, this position will partner closely with program leaders to promote financial understanding and align financial processes with operational needs. This position is Hybrid but must be located in Muscle shoals or be able to relocate.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and coordinate the annual audit process with external auditors
- Prepare timely, accurate financial statements (monthly, quarterly, and annual) in accordance with GAAP
- Manage monthly closes and oversee A/P, A/R, and financial reporting
- Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with international, national, and donor regulations (FAR, GAAP, EU, etc.)
- Oversee grant and contract compliance, working closely with legal and program teams
- Support budget development, forecasting, and donor financial reporting
- Collaborate on proposal budgets with the Business Development team
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and advise senior leadership on financial adjustments
- Mentor finance staff and ensure timely, transparent communication of financial data
- Support external and project-specific audits and tax filings
Work Experience
Requirements:
- CPA certification (required)
- Bachelor’s in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s preferred)
- 10+ years of experience in accounting/finance, preferably in nonprofit or international settings
- Strong GAAP knowledge and financial reporting expertise
- Experience with donor-funded projects and compliance (e.g., US, EU)
- Familiarity with foreign subsidiaries and currency translation
- Proven leadership, attention to detail, and strong communication skills
- Proficient in accounting software (e.g., NetSuite) and Excel
- Foreign language skills, especially French, are a plus
- Ability to read and interpret foreign currency transactions and perform related accounting functions
