Overview:
General Duties & Responsibilities:
Operations Management
- Oversee daily scrap yard operations: receiving, sorting, processing, and shipping metals.
- Direct workflow to maximize productivity.
- Operate and supervise use of heavy equipment (shears, balers, loaders, forklifts, cranes).
- Schedule maintenance and repairs to reduce downtime.
- Implement and improve operational policies and procedures.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, train, and manage yard staff.
- Promote teamwork and continuous improvement.
- Conduct performance reviews and address discipline as needed.
- Manage scheduling, timecards, and staffing levels.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce safety policies and regulatory compliance (OSHA, EPA, etc.).
- Conduct safety meetings, inspections, and risk assessments.
- Train staff on safety practices and PPE use.
- Maintain permits and ensure environmental compliance.
Inventory & Quality Control
- Maintain accurate material inventory.
- Oversee quality control and grading of scrap.
- Collaborate with commercial team on markets, purchasing, and sales.
- Minimize material loss through proper handling and storage.
Financial & Administrative
- Assist with budget planning and management.
- Monitor KPIs (production, recovery, costs).
- Approve purchases for supplies, equipment, and services.
- Maintain strong relationships with customers, suppliers, and carriers.
Skills and Experience:
Qualifications & Competencies
●Required:
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent./ Associates is preferred but not required
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in the scrap metal recycling industry or a related heavy industrial environment (e.g., manufacturing, construction, waste management).
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in a supervisory or management role.
• Proven experience operating heavy machinery such as loaders, forklifts, and material handlers.
• Strong knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metal identification and grading.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
• Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite, email)
