Position Summary:

The Plant Operator II is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of high-capacity steam boilers (up to 4,000 BHP), chillers (up to 2,000 tons), and other systems supporting steam and chiller plant operations. This role ensures compliance with ASME and NFPA codes and standards while maintaining consistent utility services.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Operates and controls utility panels to monitor and maintain critical plant equipment.
  • Maintains accurate records in operating logs, logbooks, and regulatory reports.
  • Oversees functions associated with the electrical power distribution panel.
  • Reads and interprets OEM manuals and precision instruments.
  • Performs minor piping repairs and mechanical tasks.
  • Conducts preventive and corrective maintenance on systems such as:
  • Compressed air
  • CO₂ systems
  • Steam boilers
  • Water purification systems
  • Fuel oil
  • Chillers and glycol systems
  • Manages boiler water chemistry:
  • Samples, tests, analyzes, mixes, and injects chemicals.
  • Conducts blow downs to maintain waterside conditions.
  • Inspects plant operations by monitoring meters, charts, pressures, and temperatures.
  • Maintains a clean and safe boiler room environment to prevent fire hazards.
  • Operates hand and power tools safely.
  • Follows OSHA standards and state/federal regulations when working with hazardous materials and power equipment.
  • Uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Drives utility vehicles to work sites and ensures protection against vandalism and theft.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a multi-boiler high-pressure steam plant.
  • Holds a Third Class Power Engineers License from NIULPE (National Institute for the Uniform Licensing of Power Engineers, Inc.).
  • Working knowledge of ASME and NFPA codes for power boilers.
  • Some positions may require:
  • A valid Georgia driver's license.
  • An insurable driving record.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to frequently lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Must be capable of pushing or pulling up to 150 pounds correctly.
