Job Description

Ultra Electronics, Communication & Integrated Systems (Ultra CIS) is one of the larger UK based Ultra businesses and is operationally run as four business units: Information Assurance, Secure Communications, EWST and Surveillance & Security Systems. These business units are underpinned by a shared services structure which incorporates finance, HR, operations and communications. Across Ultra CIS we provide encryption, network protection, automated payments, tactical and commercial communications and telemetry systems, covert and mobile surveillance systems and situational awareness technology to defence, public sector and commercial customers worldwide.

Job Purpose:
Providing team leadership to the Environmental Test team, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget and to the required quality of both internal and external customers.

Scope / dimensions:
Leading a team of up to 3 Environmental Test Engineers, this person will be looking after multiple projects at a time; developing test schedule, writing test plans and procedures and providing hands-on testing support as and when required.

Key Responsibilities:
• Ensure that all work within their function is of sufficient quality and is carried out according to the correct processes and procedures such as MIL-STD, DEF STAN, RTCA.
• Provide line management to all employees within their function (i.e. conducts appraisals, career development discussions, provides input to salary review).
• Liaise with design engineering teams to agree and define test strategies and procedures.
• Preparation and execution of test regimes, strategies and schedules for required testing; monitor progress against these and liaise with Engineering Project Leads and Project Managers.
• Provide support in the design of test set-ups, jigs and fixtures.
• Write technical acceptable test reports for internal and external customers in line with company specifications.
• Review and sign-off significant technical documents; chair technical reviews. Ensuring appropriate set-up and operation of environmental test equipment such as Vibration Shakers, Ovens and Climatic Chambers etc.
• Maintenance and control of the environmental test laboratory.
• Ensure that equipment maintenance contracts are in place and renewed as and when required.
• Support Bids and Proposals and PV activities.
• Define and improve processes, practices, methodologies and tools for their function; ensuring that these are rolled-out effectively.
• Manage security of information as defined in the Security manual.

Job Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
• Proven experience of previous environmental working practice and environmental testing methods and equipment for military (ground and air-borne) and commercial products.
• In-depth understanding of the relevant DEF-STAN and MIL-STD standards and specifications.
• Able to interact effectively with internal customers and external suppliers, such as 3rd party test houses, suppliers of environmental test equipment and maintenance companies.
• Ability to independently and accurately compile test reports.
• Ability to design and optimise test fixtures and test set-ups.
• Ability to review documents and drawings to ensure clear communication of key parameters.

Qualifications:
• HNC Qualified (or equivalent) - Engineering Discipline (or equivalent on-the-job experience).
• Ability to obtain SC Clearance.
