Ultra Electronics Command & Sonar Systems is a business within the Ultra Electronics Group and has supplied defence electronics systems for over 30 years to the UK Ministry of Defence, to major prime contractors and also directly to international military and commercial customers.

Ultra Electronics Command & Sonar Systems has a wide expertise in offering turnkey project, integrated system design and niche product solutions, using in house technology, specialist third party products and Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) technology.

Providing solutions across a range of military, civil and related high integrity systems including C4ISR, data links, weapon interfacing, vetronics, safety critical systems, electro-optical surveillance, tracking and gunfire control, navigation systems and data distribution and networking systems.  Ultra Electronics prides itself on developing long term relationships with its customers providing support for equipment throughout its service life and often beyond.

Job Requirements

Job Purpose

To provide Supportability Engineering expertise to design teams to ensure the availability, reliability and maintainability of product designs and the development of the support solution for products across the UECSS portfolio with a focus on Sonar Systems.

 Key Responsibilities

Accountable for:

  • Leading the ILS activities for assigned projects throughout the lifecycle.

  • Ensuring that ILS is considered as part of any Design Review.
  • Briefing change approvers on the underlying assumptions of the support concept and the areas where design change is likely to impact upon ILS.
  • Maintaining knowledge of the as-designed standard of the product to an appropriate level for the support strategy being pursued (e.g. to LRU level) at an appropriate frequency (e.g. to the latest mod state / build standard).

  • Maintaining an awareness of any deviations to the as-designed standard (e.g. concessions) which may impact the support strategy for the product, at an appropriate level (e.g. major concessions only) and frequency.

    Responsible for:

  • Making recommendations on the tailoring of ILS activities to meet the requirements of a particular project.

  • Supporting the Design Review process as the project Subject Matter Expert on ILS.

  • Providing ILS input to the System Requirements Specification (SYR) and making recommendations on the verification method for ILS related requirements.

  • Ensuring that the assigned (ILS) requirements are met and verified through a programme of progressive assurance in line with the system Validation & Verification (V&V) strategy.

  • Supporting the Change Control & Obsolescence Management processes to ensure that the supportability implications of proposed changes & obsolescence resolution actions are considered.

  • Supporting the ILS aspects of Bid / Business Development activities as required.

  • Office based with working across all CSS operational sites as required by project demands.  Regular travel within the UK (typically same day return) with occasional travel overseas.
  • Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths subject or equivalent professional experience
  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Powerpoint, Excel etc.)
  • Reliability modelling tools, e.g. Windchill Prediction, Opus)
  • Human Factors modelling tools (e.g. JACK)

  • Inventory analysis tools (e.g. Simlox)
