Job Description

Ultra Electronics, USSI designs and manufactures products and provides engineering services under three business areas: undersea products, audio products, and power management/fuel cell products.
Based in Columbia City, Indiana, USSI is an industry leader in the development and production of advanced electronic, electro-mechanical, and hydro-acoustic sensors, including sonobuoys, and sensor systems for military, homeland security, and commercial applications. USSI also designs and manufactures communications equipment for integration into personal protective gear for firefighters and first responders as well as acoustic hailing products, which provide unparalleled fidelity long range voice communications and large area mass notification.
At our Ann Arbor, Michigan, office, USSI designs and manufactures next generation power management technology and solutions for military and commercial/remote industrial applications using propane-powered solid oxide fuel cell systems.
USSI Production Engineers function as centers of expertise in manufacturing systems and best practices, including line setups, part and material flow, personnel and machinery optimization, ergonomics, and failure mode analysis.  Production Engineers work with the

Production Team Leaders to support sonobuoy manufacturing by:

  •  writing work instructions,

  • implementing industry best practices (lean concepts, 5S, Value Stream Mapping, constraint analysis, etc.),

  • conducting Job Safety and ergonomic analysis,

  • leading failure mode analysis activities. 

Additionally, Production Engineers are integral in developing line layouts and capacity analysis, and are heavily involved with the development and implementation of improvements related to production flow, tooling, facilities, material and common design areas across products, and product performance. 

The Production Engineer is also the primary point of contact for the Design Engineering group in the implementation of design for manufacturing programs.

Job Requirements


• Must be a US citizen and be able to obtain a secret clearance  
• Mechanical  Engineering or equivalent B.S. degree with 2 years minimum experience and strong technical / mechanical skills, or  M.S. degree with 1 year of manufacturing support and strong technical / mechanical skills  
• Strong skills in design analysis and design for manufacturing
• Must be a team player with good communication skills 
• Must have strong computer skills and be especially proficient in MS Office  
• Must have strong analytical skills; especially driving to root cause when completing failure analysis, determining best practice methodologies for manufacturing, and determining key process failure modes 
• Proficient at dimensional and tolerance analysis from part level through system level 
• Must be willing to travel to various test sites and supplier locations. 
• Job entails working around high voltage RF Welding equipment, where pacemakers and pregnancies are restricted. 
• Ideal candidate will have solder experience and be capable of inspecting for proper solder per IPC standards. 
Desired Experience:

• Experience with electronic components, printed circuit boards and circuit card assemblies 
• Prior experience with plastic welding techniques (RF Welding, Sonic Welding, Heat Staking)
• Significant experience and familiarity with manufacturing best practices (lean concepts, 5S, Value Stream Mapping, constraint analysis, etc.) and their application
• Working knowledge and experience with SPC and data-driven analytics
Salary Range: $55,000 -$75,000
