Job Description


Position Overview:

This position is responsible for diagnosing and performing all repairs on customer owned equipment in the field for marine and industrial engines. This will include troubleshooting, tearing down, cleaning, inspecting and assembling parts. Must be skilled with mechanical and electrical tasks and own a complete set of hand tools. Requires ability to work with minimal supervision, interact with customers, and complete paperwork accurately and timely. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record a must.
 
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

  • Provide preventative maintenance and repair services at service centers and/or customer accounts in accordance with established procedures and techniques, using proper tools, test equipment and replacement parts
  • Repairs and overhauls product
  • Establish and maintain positive and collaborative working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Assist region to achieve revenue goals as it relates to the sale of company products and services
  • Participate and complete all required training programs, meetings and seminars
  • Engage in self-appraisal and continuous learning and development
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of the job
  • Some shift work may be required
  • Performs on-call duties and responsibilities as required of all field service technicians
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Skills:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work extended hours or outside assigned territory as needed
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently without close supervision
  • Ability to deal effectively with all employees and external business contacts while conveying a positive, service-oriented attitude
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed on short notice and up to 25% of the time.
  • Must have experience dealing with customers in difficult situations, good phone etiquette, and the ability to function in fast-paced environment
  • Must have knowledge of marine diesel engines and generators
  • Strong technical/mechanical skills and experience required
  • Must be able to read, write and understand service instructions
  • Must have at least intermediate knowledge of MTU, DDC, 2-stroke, and/or Northern Lights Marine products
  • Prefer knowledge in electronics and advanced troubleshooting skills
  • Knowledge of Volvo marine engines a plus

Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma and/or equivalent combination of education or experience
  • Post-secondary vocational education strongly preferred
  • Must have equivalent of no less than eight (8) years’ experience with technical repairs
  • Educated in diesel engines, electronic diagnostics, hydraulics, and welding
  • Must have experience with generators and generator controls; load banks and load testing of generators
  • Minimum of eight (8) years Marine experience preferred

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to communicate with customers and must be able to exchange accurate information. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items up to 70 pounds. Must be able to detect parts and machinery from a distance and up close.
Tool Requirements:
  • Must have a complete set of hand tools

Travel:
  • Travel is primary local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area travel may be expected
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed on short notice and up to 25% of the time

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • We are drug free workplace that conducts pre-employment physical and drug screenings. We are regulated by the department of transportation and will be conducting random drug testing at regular intervals.
