Job Description

The Chief Ministry Officer is responsible for leading the vision for Volunteers of America’s ministry of service and spiritual care in collaboration with the Ministry Development department, Church Governing Board, and National President. Positions Volunteers of America as a national faith leader. Directs all aspects of Volunteers of America’s interfaith and spiritual goals including communications, education, and involvement in the interfaith community.

Essential Functions, Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Leads Ministry of Service Message, Vision and Spiritual Care 
  • Builds Collaborative Relationships and manages VOA’s involvement in the broader Interfaith and Spiritual community 
  • Promotes Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as part of the Church 
  • Ministry Fund Development
  • Encourages Innovative Ideas for VOA’s Ministry of Services
  • Leads Ministry Communications
  • Oversees Ministry Development Department Operations
  • Other Duties as assigned or needed

This is an exciting opportunity due to the retirement of Harry Quiett, VP of Ministry Development since 2000.  Our ministry of service is vibrant and drives our mission in our "Church without Walls."  We are looking for our next leader to grow our ministry for the future of the organization.

Volunteers of America is a church without walls.  Founded in 1896, Volunteers of America is a national, nonprofit, faith-based organization dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential.  Through hundreds of human service programs, including housing and healthcare, VOA helps 1.5 million people in over 400 communities in 46 states. For more than a century, our church without walls has supported and empowered America's most vulnerable groups, including veterans, the frail elderly, at-risk youth, men and women returning from prison, homeless individuals and families, people with disabilities, and those recovering from addictions.  Our ministry of services touches the mind, body, heart and spirit of those we serve, integrating our deep compassion with highly effective programs and services.

Job Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Seminary theological training and Master’s degree or similar education in religious and theological studies. Broad knowledge of the universal church and individual Christian denominations.
  • Ten years of ministerial work - five years’ experience in a non-profit environment and preferably with human services experience with three to five years (preferred) as a lead minister in a congregation.
  • Demonstrated skills in pastoral care, ministerial education, and collaborative working relationships.
  • Leadership abilities and strategic thinking in order to design, plan, organize and implement ministry goals through collaborations and communication with a broad and diverse audience.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively with a variety of minister issues. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Person of prayer and spiritual maturity; demonstrated commitment to social justice and evangelism; ability to inspire others to pastoral leadership, commitment and action.
  • Ordained minister (preferred) and / or willing to apply for commission and ordination with VOA within 2 years.
  • Ability to work flexible hours. Ability to travel is required.
