Job Description

Position Summary

The Staff Accountant I will be responsible for assisting the Operations Accounting group. This role will entail timely month end close of operations including journal entries, complex calculations, analytical procedures to validate completeness and accuracy, reconciliations and regulatory reporting, submitting timely payments to regulatory agencies as necessary, and supporting the external and internal audits.


Supervisor Responsibilities

This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities over other employees.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ability to prepare monthly journal entries and key account reconciliations during month-end close.
  • Assists with bank reconciliations, cash application, and related research.
  • Support the processing of coal logistics for large rail and barge operations
  • Performs more complex accounting duties as assigned and in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Prepare documents and reports providing research, conclusions, and recommendations for solutions to problems.
  • Assists with quarter-end, and year-end audit requests.
  • Perform monthly financial close functions through assisting with review of financial statements.
  • Process periodic tax and royalty payments and filing to government entities and private landowners with strict deadlines and high attention to detail



  • Perform related work as required.



Job Requirements

Typical Physical Demands

Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires constant data input for extended periods of time without leaving the work area. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Requires mobility sufficient to travel.

Typical Working Conditions

Normal office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field
  • Minimum 2 years of related work experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.


Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

  • CPA/CMA preferred.
